Let's be honest, most of our favorite quotes are from the Star Wars films and cartoons. They're inspiring, witty and some of them we may even live by. If you were to pick one favorite quote, which would it be and why? Who says it? Do you own anything with this particular quote on it? These are just a few prompts to help you get started.

Star Wars ComLINKS | Anakin and His Angel

"YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARK SIDE."

I have many favorite Star Wars quotes but this one always seems to the first one that comes to mind. The words Darth Vader speaks are just as powerful as his formidable voice. They always seem carefully chosen and so direct no one would dare question him. Well, except for Lando. This very line is something to be feared especially during this scene where he has a pivotal moment with Luke Skywalker on the forest moon of Endor.

In Return of the Jedi Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader meet again but now Luke knows who he is and refers to him as his father for the first time which stirs something up in Vader. He listens to Luke intently, his words clearly distracting him while he attempts to direct the conversation elsewhere by bringing attention to his newly constructed lightsaber (I imagine Vader must've had some sort of feeling of pride overlooking the hilt). However, Luke stays on target and without hesitation requests that he come with him. Vader turns away contemplating before replying with, "Obi-Wan once thought as you do. You don't know the power of the Dark Side. I must obey my master." I've always interpreted this line as a warning. Specifically for his son to be careful where he is treading. He knows this is all new for him and that his knowledge of the Dark Side is minuscule compared to his. Vader also knows that there is no turning back for him. The Emperor would respond with extreme consequences should he choose a different path. Luke, of course, stands his ground and continues to try and reason with his father. Finally, Vader expresses himself in a deeper way, "It is too late for me, son." As the Stormtroopers take Luke away to his new master, the Emperor, Vader is left alone to contemplate the last words his son left with him, "Then my father is truly dead." It's the first time, in the Original Trilogy, that we see Darth Vader show raw emotion in his struggle to choose good over evil - his son or his master. Though his face is masked you can feel every ounce of torment in his demeanor. With his hands grasping the rails and head hung low, the scene ends. Oh. My. Heart.

As you can see, this quote has a much deeper meaning for me besides the fact that it said by my favorite character. Vader's journey from boy to machine is a tragic journey but it has always meant a lot to me. Though this scene makes my heart heavy it's my favorite moment in Return of the Jedi because we see the same belief that Padme had in Anakin in Luke. At the same time we see the battle Vader is facing in trying to fight against letting Anakin Skywalker break through. There is so much history and meaning in those three short minutes and it's a tragic but beautiful picture.

What is your favorite quote? Don't be shy, participate in this month's ComLINKS!
