Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge - Droid Depot Review

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge - Kyber Crystal Price Increase, Rules & Stock | Anakin and His Angel

On August 30th, Jason and I celebrated eleven years of marriage together on Batuu. I love that I get to say that! When Galaxy's Edge first opened, we knew we didn't want to explore all there was to do at once, so we decided to save building our very own droid for this occasion. Of course, I documented the entire process to share with all of you. Come meet our droid!

The Droid Depot (located nextdoor to Savi's Workshop) is not only the place to stop if you want to build either a R2 or BB Unit but it's also a great shop filled with all of the droid collectibles and fashion you could imagine along with a lot of great visuals to admire.

Reservations are suggested but walk-ins are welcome if there is room. I have been regularly going to Galaxy's Edge, so I knew that a reservation wasn't necessary. However, if you're traveling to Galaxy's Edge from out of state, I would definitely make one just in case. Crowds are always changing at the parks. You can do this on the Disneyland APP or on the website.

It costs $99.99 per astromech droid unit, plus tax (the Annual Passholder discount is not accepted). You'll also receive a remote control, carry box and instructions at the end of your build. You'll be given a tray with step-by-step instructions on the parts you can choose from and how to piece them together based on the droid unit you purchased.

Some of you may be aware that there was a time where guests could purchase an additional two parts for their droid within 48 hours of their build if they showed their original receipt. This rule has been changed and we were not able to buy any extra parts. It's hard to say if this feature will be made available again since rules have come and gone regularly throughout Galaxy's Edge.

There are also Droid accessories (they vary in price) that you can purchase for your R2 units and personality chips ($12.99) for either droid. They were completely out of stock of the personality chips when we were there but we definitely are interested in picking one up once they become available again. Droid backpacks can also be purchased for $49.99. These are considered a hot ticket item and are not always in stock. The Annual Passholder discount works on all of the accessories!

After paying for your droid, you'll then be directed to the conveyor belt where a myriad of droid parts quickly continue to go by. I found this part to be especially fun! I got the feeling I was in a workshop and it felt good being able to hand-pick the parts for our droid to customize it to our liking. We already knew we wanted to name our droid BB-HRT (pronounced "BB-HEART") so we wanted to go with a red and black color scheme.

Once we had all the parts necessary to make our little droid come to life, we were guided to a separate station where we placed the pieces together along with a couple of other parts that were provided to complete the process. It wasn't difficult to do any of these steps at all and I think that if you have a child in your life that enjoys puzzles or building in general, that they'll have fun doing this!

The last part of the experience is the Cast Member activating your droid! This was done in a really creative way that made me so excited I couldn't help but squee with delight once I heard BB-HRT make noise for the first time (she has a variety of different sounds, which I love). I can only imagine how a child would feel! The noises the droid makes sound just like the movie and are neither too quiet or too loud. Before leaving we went through all of the controls with our very kind CM and made sure everything was working properly.

You know me, I had to have a little photoshoot with my new girl! Her name is BB-HRT because Jason calls me his BB-HEART and has been for a long time. I thought it sounded like the perfect droid name! Many people commented on my social media accounts saying that she looks like one of the Coke bottles on Batuu and I literally didn't notice this until you all said so. I definitely see the resemblance!

Unfortunately, you're not allowed to use the droids you build at Galaxy's Edge or anywhere inside the parks on the ground but we didn't get scolded for taking these photos. We definitely plan on taking BB-HRT back to Batuu at some point to see how she interacts with the surroundings on the planet. These droids can also interact with each other which I think is so cute! Perhaps in the future we will get her a friend.

I find that BB-HRT works best on carpeted floors. She does work on hard flooring but it's a little difficult to control her this way as she moves a lot quicker and her head will come really close to hitting the ground. Just something to keep in mind if you decide to build a droid!

Overall, I absolutely loved the experience of building my own droid and I'm honestly so impressed with how life-like BB-HRT is. I definitely think it is worth the price!

What do you think of our new droid? Are you planning on building a droid of your own? What questions do you have that I may not have covered in this post? Let me know in a comment below!

    1. Hi! Thanks so much. I actually haven't heard of anyone having problems taking their droid back home with them on a plane. I would definitely check with whoever you are flying with to be sure. That way you can ship it if need be.

  2. BB-HRT is such a cutie! I am just so enamored with the concept of the Droid Depot, and I don't blame you for squeeing. It's like a sci-fi Build A Bear!

    1. Yay! I'm so glad you think she's cute too. And oh-my-gosh, it's totally like Build A Bear! I can't believe I didn't think of that.
