CHAPTER 1
- A Mandalorian bounty hunter tracks a target for a well-paying client -
Written by: Jon Favreau | Directed by: Dave Filoni
The Mandalorian takes places about five years after The Return of the Jedi.
After watching the first episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+, I have to be honest and say I didn't love it. I was completely blown away by everything visually, I actually can't believe it's not a movie! But the story, though it intrigued me, did not grasp me the way Star Wars usually does. On top of that I found the score to be quite distracting. It felt too busy at times and like it didn't blend well with many of the scenes.
It was exciting noticing several familiarities like a Gatekeeper Droid and even the Kowakian Monkey-Lizards even though I probably won't ever recover from that scene (MY HEART!). Without elements like these I think that the show overall might not have felt like Star Wars at all to me even with the Mandalorian present in almost every single scene. The "feeling" is something that every fan is familiar with and one that is different for all of us. I realize we are only one episode in of an eight part series but this was my initial experience. Although I did not love the first episode, I did find it enjoyable and I'm actually anxious to watch the second episode this Friday! I also plan to do a re-watch of Chapter 1.
My favorite part about the show so far is the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal). I like the way he carries himself, his quiet nature and the careful words he chooses to speak. His combat style seems to be unique and I'm hoping that we get to see many more action-packed sequences that will show off his talents. It was a real treat to see him fighting alongside IG-11 (Taika Waititi) against the different alien species! My guess is that we haven't seen the last of the spunky bounty hunting droid. I was really shocked that the Mandalorian took him out the way he did. I think I might have actually gasped, "What!?" because I instantly loved the character. It was interesting to me that they were both given different instructions on what they were to do with the bounty they were after. Speaking of which...
A baby Yoda? Well, not Yoda specifically but one of his species anyways. Who even saw that coming? It makes sense the little one was fifty years old considering Yoda passed away at nine-hundred years old. I wonder for how long they are in the infant or youngling stage? I'm so curious about the mystery surrounding this bounty.
"I have spoken."

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt this way. You nailed all of my thoughts. The score really bothered me. One thing I enjoyed, was the mandalorian tribe. The armor Smith, the Beskar Steel. It's an awesome tribute to the EU stories. (non canon)
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading! I wondered if there would be other people who would agree with me. The little I have seen so far is that everyone absolutely loves it. And that's really cool, I'm not super familiar with the EU stories.
DeleteSo I felt the same after the first time I watched it. BUT after I rewatched it I loved it much more. The score was slightly odd but I like it after listening to it on its own (it’s on amazon music). I’m thinking the longer we watch, the more Swarzy it will get. It definitely explores an entire different realm than what we’ve really ever seen before! I’m excited to see how the rest of the story goes!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you liked the episode even more after a second time around. I watched it again as well and I feel like I enjoyed it a little more but the music in the first half of the episode still bothered me. It's just going to take some getting used to I guess. Thanks for reading!
