Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 - Review (Spoiler-free)

Happy Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 Day! You can now watch all nine episodes on Disney+. I was fortunate to receive screeners, thanks to Disney, before the release. There are many impactful stories, unique concepts we've never seen in Star Wars, and a plethora of easter eggs! Below, you'll find my ranking and spoiler-free thoughts on each episode.

THE DUEL: PAYBACK

4/5 Stars

The Duel has been my favorite Star Wars: Visions episode since the series first began, so I had high hopes for the sequel. While I thought the episode felt rushed and sometimes difficult to follow, I really enjoyed it! The animation appeared much more advanced than the original episode, making it quite an eye-candy experience, and I loved that the score literally sounded like a Star Wars soundtrack!

Continuing with the mysteriousness of Master Ronin, his Sith-hunting is interrupted when a figure from his past (Machine Man) seeks him out on the planet Olcatz, and, of course, chaos ensues!

This episode featured more droids and creatures, including Ewoks. MANY of them, I might add. They were an absolute delight, and they even got in on the action, as they would! Speaking of action, there are multiple lightsaber battles in this one! My favorites were the duels on top of the AK-BKs between Master Ronin, Aneé-san, and Machine Man, which required a lot of swift maneuvering as they toppled over. It felt very reminiscent of the battle on Mustafar.

I think fans will be happy with the continuation of this story!

THE SONG OF FOUR WINGS

5/5 Stars

This was my favorite episode from Volume 3! I loved the colorful, smooth animation, the quirky characters, and the touching storyline; explaining that everyone is here for a reason. There are several Star Wars familiarities, including Snowtroopers, AT-ATs, and even seismic charges!

Fans of the character Grogu from The Mandalorian are in for a real treat! There is a baby Gigoran named Woopas who is rescued by a Princess (Crane) and her R2 Unit (R9-TR2 aka Tor-tu) on the snow planet Joetz. Woopas made me squeal and laugh out loud!

The Princess wears one of the coolest outfits I’ve ever seen, which looks like a mish-mash of Stormtrooper parts and something from Princess Leia’s wardrobe. Her Lisa Frank-esque droid has a special ability and plays music! These two are basically icons.

Overall, this episode was a lot of fun! I predict this will also be a favorite of many.

THE NINTH JEDI: CHILD OF HOPE

5/5 Stars

The Ninth Jedi was a highlight in Volume 1 for me, and the sequel was no different. It took such an unexpected and heartwarming turn, which I adored.

The story continues as Kara is separated from Juro amid an epic space pursuit by the Jedi Hunters. She finds herself on an abandoned ship, rescued by the kindest service droid (Teto), who will absolutely break your heart. He is incredibly loyal and helps Kara in ways that she didn't know she needed.

The animation is incredible and soft, with an opening sequence and mid-story battle that are particularly exceptional. It is accompanied by a fantastic score, which reminded me a lot of the Star Wars Jedi games at times. It felt so cinematic!

With The Ninth Jedi getting a spinoff series next year, I hope that it continues to follow Kara’s story in becoming a Jedi and finding her father.

THE BOUNTY HUNTERS

3/5 Stars

The unique duo — an orphaned girl trained as a soldier (Sevn) and a medical droid (IV-A4) with a split personality — realize their latest bounty hunting job isn't what they expected, and end up with an important choice to make.

I didn’t fully connect with the writing style, which felt somewhat shallow at times, but watching it again with subtitles was a better experience. It also helped establish the story, which I sometimes felt a little lost in. I enjoyed it much more and picked up on some details I had missed the first time.

IV-A4 was the highlight of the episode for me. Seeing him shift from one droid to the next was entertaining, even if his other side was highly aggressive. It’s the side that got in on the action, which was awesome!

YUKO’S TREASURES
Kinema Citrus Co.
4/5 Stars

A little boy (Yuko) and his bear droid (Bily) find themselves on an unexpected adventure in this beautiful, family-centered story. It has a lot of heart, and it’s sometimes silly, especially when the eccentric Pirates are around.

This episode brought me back to that feeling of watching Saturday morning cartoons as a child. While it didn’t necessarily feel like Star Wars at times, there were exciting reminders throughout, like the Twin Suns, Jawas, and even an adorable Krayt Dragon. I didn’t know I needed a Krayt Dragon plushie until now! And yes, it takes place on Tatooine!

Everyone who has been excited about Bily, who has a microwave oven for a stomach, will not be disappointed. It’s these kinds of lovable characters that make it so unfair they’re not a part of our world.

THE LOST ONES

3/5 Stars

F returns in this sequel to The Village Bride, where we find her helping refugees who lost their planet when the Empire abandoned it after using it for carbonite mining. F befriends Ron, and together they face the Empire, who have a strong presence in this story, all the while F is also unexpectedly faced by someone she was close to as a Padawan.

There are a couple of astonishing shots of an Imperial Star Destroyer that look like they’ve been pulled straight from the films! It was so impressive. I'd love to see the making of those scenes.

I didn’t feel particularly drawn to this episode, but I can appreciate its uniqueness, and I love that they incorporated the score from the first one. It’s so beautiful!

THE SMUGGLER
TRIGGER
4/5 Stars

An old woman (Gleehu) and a young man (Arluu) seek the aid of a young and fiesty smuggler (Chita) to transport them to someplace safe, away from the Empire and the Bounty Hunter who’s after them. With their combined strengths, they made quite the team!

The action-adventure genre and ambitious adolescence of the main characters reminded me a lot of Star Wars Rebels, especially the chase scenes!

This story was probably the most unparalleled of all the episodes in Volume 3, and it very much felt like Star Wars, both in familiar and new concepts! There is one character detail that I am completely obsessed with and hope to see utilized in a canon live-action film or series one day. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it!

THE BIRD OF PARADISE
Polygon Pictures
3/5 Stars

Of all the episodes, this one was the most beautiful! The animation's fluidity was flawless, as was the use of nature combined with the Force.

We meet a young Jedi (Nakime) who struggles with her own desires, immaturity, and a fear of death that is beginning to take over. She is challenged with facing her demons and applying what she has learned from her Master to survive the darkness.

While elements of the Force, the Light, and the Dark are present, it didn’t feel very Star Wars to me, but it was still an enchanting and interesting watch. I would love to see all of the concept art for this one!

This episode felt like a very disorienting fever dream where the Empire is losing the fight no matter which way it turns, resulting in agony and death while jazz music is playing. There were moments when the animation looked appealing, and I appreciated that it was in the POV of what seemed like a couple of Stormtroopers. Still, overall, it was unsettling and moved too quickly (as in, literally constant movement) for me.

There’s a cup of blue milk for everyone, and this, unfortunately, wasn’t mine.
