The Mandalorian Season 2: Chapter 16 - My Favorite Moments

The Mandalorian Season 2: Chapter 16 - My Favorite Moments | Anakin and His Angel
(Grogu Reborn Baby Doll by Little Dearies)

The Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian ended on such an emotional and extremely high note. I watched it earlier this morning and I'm still in shock! Today, I am going to discuss some of my favorite moments from Chapter 16 but before I get into that, I have to be honest and say that I was actually worried during the first thirteen minutes or so of this Chapter. I just wasn't feeling it. The lack of drama I would typically expect in a season finale and the odd choices of music (Dark Trooper dubstep?) threw me off but once Din reached Grogu's cell on Moff Gideon's ship, I was LOVING every bit of it. Overall, I think Season 2 was outstanding and I'm excited to see where the story will take us in the third Season which debuts on Christmas Day 2021.

CHAPTER 16
The Rescue: The Mandalorian and his allies attempt a daring rescue.
Written by: Jon Favreau | Directed by: Peyton Reed

DIN DJARIN VS. MOFF GIDEON

Although Din understandably didn't kill off Moff Gideon like I had hoped he would, this duel really made for a great action sequence! It was awesome to see how Din quickly learned what he could and couldn't use against the Darksaber which ultimately led him to gaining the advantage in the fight. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Darksaber in action too! There's something about it being the shape of a blade that makes it slightly more intimidating to me than a lightsaber. I can't believe that the Darksaber is now in the posession of Din! He looks incredible weilding it but he just doesn't care to have it. This really surprised me as I was so sure Bo Katan was going to take it back in the finale. My mind immediately went to envisioning a Funko Pop of Din with the Darksaber but if you've been around for a while, that shouldn't surprise you.

LUKE!!!

Luke Skywalker. It made so much sense for it to be him who responded to Grogu's call in Chapter 14. This character has grown on me a lot since the Sequel Trilogy and I was honestly tremendously happy to see him! As soon as the X-Wing showed up on screen and little Grogu's ears perked up after sensing Luke's presence, I looked over at my husband Jason and exclaimed, "NOOO!!!! IS IT HIM!? OMG!". From that point on, I was freaking out and according to Jason, was near falling off the couch from leaning over so far in disbelief. The way they filmed Luke's scenes both through the eyes of Grogu and Din on the security screen and to the viewers, in fullscreen, made the situation more mysterious and intense because while I'm sure many believed it to be Luke, I really wasn't quite sure until I saw the black glove and the lightsaber. I got some serious Darth Vader vibes (think Vader on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith) from the way Luke carried himself and fought through the Dark Troopers with purpose to get to Grogu, and I was living for it! The way he moved was both forceful and majestic. Jason noticed that Luke force-pulled a Dark Trooper towards himself and cut it in half as it moved towards him just like Kylo Ren does with one of the natives of Mustafar in The Rise of Skywalker. Could Luke have taught Ben this trick while at the Jedi Temple? I also have to talk about the music because although I wasn't a fan of some of the music choices earlier on in this Chapter, I don't think it could have been more perfect during the entirety of Luke Skywalker's involvement. I'm also really happy that Mark Hamill got to return and play his character again. Even though there was editing involved, Luke sounded and looked great! I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that he will be featured on the last character reveal poster this Monday, right?

FACE TO FACE

It was such a huge sacrifice that Din made to remove his helmet in from of everyone for Grogu. The way Grogu gently touched Din's face to show his affection for him was so pure. You could see the love for Grogu and the pain Din was feeling over letting him go all over his face, but he did a good job holding it together and encouraging him to not be afraid. He told Grogu that he promised he would see him again which I hope we will see at some point. Maybe after some time has passed and Grogu has his own lightsaber - I would die! I thought that Grogu would need more convincing after Din put him down to go with Luke but then R2-D2 appeared and grabbed Grogu's attention. Of course R2 was with Luke, where else would he be? I loved that! I wonder if R2 and Grogu have met before at the Jedi Temple? I think that there's a possibility!

SPECIAL MENTION: THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT

I did not see this post credits scene coming! I walk around the house quoting Bib Fortuna from time-to-time so I was pretty excited to see him again! I wasn't sure what purpose Boba Fett and Fennec Shand had in killing off Bib and his crew but I was intrigued by the end results seeing them seated on Jabba's old throne. But, why? What's next for these two? What will they get mixed up in on Tatooine? "The Book of Boba Fett" debuts next December but is it a separate series from The Mandalorian? I have so many questions but hopefully we will get some official confirmation soon. I'm all for a Boba Series, especially if it means I get to hear his theme in every episode. I'm obsessed with it.

What did you think of the Season 2 finale? Did it fulfill your hopes and dreams? Should Moff have lived? What do you think about Luke's appearance? Did you cry during Din and Grogu's "moment"? Tell me all of the things in a comment below or get in touch with me on Instagram or Twitter.

  1. I absolutely loved this season finale! I started tearing up and then began to cry once I suspected that the Jedi who arrived was Luke and the intensity only increased as the episode went on. It was beautifully done! 🧡

  2. I had a roller coaster of emotions during the finale, I still cant believe season 2 came and went so fast and exceed all my expectations going into this season! When my hero showed up to save the day at the end I had tears in my eyes, even though it makes the most sense for Luke to be the one to respond to Grogu's call I didn't think they would be able to pull it off. They totally did tho and then some, 10 year old me came out during that moment and I was so hyped up it was hard to concentrate on work for the rest of the day lol! I just wanted to watch ROTJ and then the finale on repeat. I thought they mirrored alot of scenes as well such as Luke going down the hallways and everyone watching on the recordings simular to Anakin when he raids the temple, or The hallway scene for the last stretch with Luke slicing down the Dark Troopers like Vader did the Rebels in Rogue One and then of course Din taking off his helmet to look upon Grogu with his own eyes like Vader did with Luke at the end of ROTJ. I cannot wait for what the future holds for Star Wars, its a good time to be a fan!

    1. Wow. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I can truly understand just how much seeing Luke again meant to you. I also think it made perfect sense for it to be him who responded to Grogu! And you're definitely right about the helmet scene. There were a lot of amazing nods in this Chapter!
