In an interview with Deadline, Kathleen Kennedy shared updates on the progress of possible future Star Wars films. Lucasfilm has several scripts in hand, but with Kennedy leaving as President to focus on producing full-time, she said everything will be up to the new team which includes Dave Filoni (the new President and CCO) and Lynwen Brennan (Co-President).
Jim Mangold and Beau Willimon wrote an incredible script, but it is definitely breaking the mold, and it’s on hold.
This movie was last reported to take place 25,000 years before Episode IV! I loved going back as far as we did in The Acolyte, so I think this sounds fascinating, and something that would be visually stunning on the big screen. I was surprised to read that it's on hold. I hope that changes!
And as you have read, Steve Soderbergh and Adam Driver turned in a script written by Scott Burns. It was just great. Anything’s a possibility if someone’s willing to take a risk.
If this isn't a glimmer of hope, I don't know what is! Don't forget, apparently Dave Filoni was interested in this story among others, which I reported about here. I would be happy even if they brought Ben back in Rey's new movie, one that curiously wasn't mentioned in this interview. I want to believe it wasn't mentioned because it's further ahead than the rest. Daisy Ridley has even spoken about it in recent interviews!
Donald Glover has turned in a script.
From a series to a movie, and a change in writers, it's a brief update, but a welcome one. I would still love to see Billy Dee Williams involved with this project in some way!
Taika Waititi has turned in a script that I think is hilarious and great. It’s just not my decision, especially when I’ve got a foot out the door.
This update surprised me the most, since we haven’t heard anything about it in a while. Hearing a Star Wars movie described as "hilarious" is very foreign, but it piques my curiosity.
He’s (Simon Kinberg) working right now. He wrote something that we read in August, and it was very good, but not there. We’ve pretty much upended the story, and then spent a great deal of time on the treatment, which he finished literally about four weeks ago. And it’s a very detailed treatment, like 70 pages. And so he is expected to give us something in March.
If you didn't know, Simon Kinberg worked on Star Wars Rebels and The Force Awakens, and now he’s working on this Star Wars Trilogy! This was previously described as the new Saga that moves Star Wars into the future. I've been wondering if Rey's new movie would develop into a trilogy, but maybe that's not the plan. Either way, I think it's time for one!
I know that Dave and Lynwen are very much on board with what Simon’s doing, and that would be a new trilogy. In the timeline of things, that takes you well into 2030 plus. So that’s really what’s up next.” She also noted, “I think the ones by Taika and Donald are somewhat alive."
Another movie I didn't see mentioned is Dave Filoni's New Republic Movie which was planned to "close out interconnected stories in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series.". Perhaps with his new role at Lucasfilm, this project has been shelved?
